The 6th International Fotobookfestival presents Daido Moriyama
documenta-Halle, Kassel, Germany

The festival pays homage to Moriyama’s book opus through numerous program items,
events and releases.
Daido Moriyama is one of the most important living photographers and photobook makers of current times. His career began during the sixties in Tokyo, where he became a member of the influential Provoke group that created the most important style of Japanese post-war avantgarde photography.
His oeuvre plays a central part in the establishment of Japanese photography as one of the important creative developments in the history of photography.
In more than 50 years, Moriyama gained fame through his coarse, contrastrich, partly unfocussed and highly grainy black-and-white photography, in which he deals which urban experiences, especially around the streets of Tokyo. His immense influence on young Japanese artists continues to date. Apart from B+W photography, Moriyama works with color, Polaroid’s, screen-printing, film, texts and installation. His fame is predominantly due to the more than 150 photobooks that he has continuously published – including masterpieces like »Japan – A Photo Theatre« (1968), »Farewell Photography« (1972), »Light and Shadow« (1982) and »Shinjuku« (2002).

Daido Book Show
The »Daido Book Show« will form the center of the festival. This is an exhibition of all of
Daido Moriyama’s books published so far where festival visitors will be able to view and
touch these books. Rare or out-of-print books will be available as reprints, while all still
available editions will be shown as originals.
Daido Walls
Inside the big documenta-Halle Kassel, the festival will show largesized Daido Moriyama
prints. The print show is related to one of Moriyama’s photobook classics.
Daido Factory
Visitors can join the Daido Factory and compose their own Daido Magazine or select a big
sized Daido Print. Both will be signed by Daido Moriyama.
Daido Book Studies
The exhibition »Photobookstudies # The Daido Books« will pay tribute to the book work of Moriyama with a new kind of display. After Studies on Ed van der Elsken and Stephen Shore shown in Paris, Hannover and Cologne, the german photobook specialist and curator Markus Schaden continues on all Daido books from »Japan – A Photo Theatre« up to »Menu«!
On Daido
The volume »On Daido« will be a photographic anthology of statements and homages to
Daido Moriyama made by internationally well-known photographers and authors.
This publication in its special form will be exclusively available during the 6th Fotobookfestival.
Japanese Photobooks 15 × 15
Pecha Kucha-style presentations from publishers, book-makers, photographers, curators,
bloggers … about their favorite contemporary Japanese photobooks.
International Photobook Dummy Award 2013
486 photobook dummies were entered to the »Photobook Dummy Award«. The 55 shortlisted books will be displayed in Kassel finally after their exhibitions in Milan, Dublin and Paris. The first 3 prizes will be given in Kassel. The first prize will be a complete book production and a presentation in the German art magazin European Photography.

Das Fotobookfestival Kassel ehrt mit zahlreichen Programmpunkten, Aktionen und Veröffentlichungen das Buch-Werk Daido Moriyamas.
Daido Moriyama (geb. 1938) gilt als einer der wichtigsten Fotografen und Fotobuch-Macher unserer Zeit. Seine Karriere begann in den 1960er Jahren in Tokyo, wo er Teil der
einflussreichen Provoke-Gruppe wurde, die die bedeutendste Form der japanischen
Nachkriegs-Avantgardefotografie hervorbrachte. Sein Werk spielt eine zentrale Rolle bei
der Etablierung der japanischen Fotografie als eine der kreativsten Ausprägungen in der
Geschichte der Fotografie überhaupt.
In mehr als 50 Jahren wurde Moriyama durch seine grobe, kontrastreiche, teils unscharfe
und stark körnige Schwarzweißfotografie berühmt, mittels der er urbane Erfahrungen vor
allem in den Straßen von Tokyo verarbeitet. Sein immenser Einfluß auf junge japanische
Künstler dauert bis heute an. Neben der Schwarzweißfotografie arbeitet Moriyama in Farbe, mit Polaroids, Siebdruck, Filmen, Texten und Installationen. Seine Bekanntheit verdankt er vor allem den über 150 Fotobüchern, die er kontinuierlich publizierte und welche Meisterwerke wie »Japan—A Photo Theatre« (1968), »Farewell Photography« (1972), »Light and Shadow« (1982) und »Shinjuku« (2002) hervorbrachten.
Daido Book Show
Im Zentrum des Festivals wird die »Daido Book Show« stehen, eine Ausstellung aller bislang publizierten Bücher Daido Moriyamas. Die Bücher stehen den Festival-Besuchern zum Durchblättern zu Verfügung. Seltene oder vergriffene Bücher werden als Faksimile-Drucke ausliegen, alle noch erhältlichen Werke werden im Original gezeigt.
Daido Walls
Im Kontrast zum fotografischen Werk in Buchform wird es in der documenta-Halle eine
Ausstellung mit großformatigen Daido Moriyama Drucken geben. Diese zeigen in einzigartiger Weise einen kompletten Buch-Klassiker als überdimensionale Buch-Print-Präsentation.
Daido Factory
In der Daido Factory können sich Besucher ihr eigenes Daido Magazin erstellen oder einen
vor Ort gedruckten großformatigen Daido Print erwerben. Magazin und Prints werden anschließend von Daido Moriyama signiert.
Daido Book Studies
Mit den »Photobookstudies # The Daido Books« wird der Kölner Fotobuch-Spezialist und
Kurator Markus Schaden die großartige Entdeckungsreise seiner Photobook Studies fortführen. Nach den Studies zu Ed van der Elsken und Stephen Shore, die in Paris, Hannover und Köln gezeigt wurden, folgen nun alle Daido Bücher von »Japan—A Photo Theatre« bis zu »Menu«.
On Daido
Die Publikation »On Daido« – eine fotografische Anthologie visueller Statements
bekannter Fotografen zu Daido Moriyama – wird in seiner besonderen Form exklusiv zum
6. Fotobookfestival erscheinen. Ergänzt wird diese fotografische Hommage durch Notizen,
Kurzgeschichten und Essays namhafter Autoren.
Japanese Photobooks 15 × 15
In »Pecha Kucha«-Kurzpräsentationen von Fotografen, Verlegern, Kuratoren, Galeristen und Bloggern werden aktuelle japanische Fotografen und Fotobücher vorgestellt.

Photobook Dummy Award 2013
Zum Internationalen Fotobuch Dummy Award wurden in diesem Jahr 443 Bücher aus 33 Ländern eingereicht. Die 55 für die Shortlist ausgewählten Buch-Dummies werden in Mailand, Dublin und Paris präsentiert und in Kassel abschließend gezeigt. Die 3 finalen Preisträger werden in Kassel von einer internatonal hochkarätig besetzten Jury ausgewählt. Dem Sieger winkt eine komplette Fotobuchproduktion sowie eine Veröffentlichung in dem Kunstmagazin European Photography.
